Cordilleran Igorots

On the very first minute I stepped into his class in 1986, the late historian and Igorot artist Prof. Geoffrey Carantes was quietly sketching a surprise on the blackboard  of an Igorot warrior and a deer overlooking a valley. Chalk in his pointing hand, he turns around and blurts in a serious tone, "May the Igorots in this class please stand up?" Around eight of us from a class of forty proudly stood up and made to speak what part of the Cordillera region we came from.

This was the beginning of how I leaned on and learned more about my homeland called the Cordillera, and whose present grandeur is mired by modern pitfalls caused by migration, government policies, corruption and environmental destruction. And so is the world.

Yet there is much hope and optimism to preserve Cordillera values and culture, to heal its environment and add vigilance to our government.

Here are cool sites to know more about us Igorots and Cordillerans as we celebrate Cordillera Day today, July 15th.
